Abstract
Orally disintegrating tablets (ODTs) are drugs which disintegrate and dissolve quickly
in the mouth without water within 60 seconds. They dissolve quickly in the presence of saliva
alone or in water, and were developed for the treatment of dysphasia, and for elderly and pediatric patients who had difficulty swallowing conventional tablets. Because of their special dosage forms, ODTs allow for easier medication of patients suffering from mental disorders and as such raised the medicinal compliance of mental disorder patients. ODTs are usually more expensive than conventional tablets due to the development costs of new dosage forms. Therefore, it might cause an unnecessary rise of medical expenses to prescribe ODTs to patients who are able to swallow tablets.
